1:40 – 2:00 pm Keynote Presentation by Kim Perdikou, Executive Vice President, Infrastructure Products Group and General Manager, Service Provider Business Team, Juniper Networks

"Today's Service Providers - Utilities or Valued Services?"
How can service providers expand their businesses in an environment where everyone’s covered by broadband and wireless connectivity? That’s the question they’re all asking.
Service providers are facing a customer base that wants content and needs bandwidth -- can service providers turn that into profit? And how can they plan network investment – especially in tougher times – to keep pace with that traffic and those transactions which deliver profit for other companies?
Kim Perdikou, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Infrastructure Products Group for Juniper Networks, Inc. explores these scenarios and suggests a path of business model evolution for wireline and wireless operators who want to stay in the game.

2:20 – 2:50 pm Tech Focus I - Overcoming challenges for Next Generation Convergence roll out
Market Perspective by: Emir Halilovic, Program Manager, Networking and Infrastructure CEMA, IDC CEMA
So much for truly seamless convergence! Today’s FMC market is fragmented into a multitude of architectural solutions, with operators hesitating over everything from technical issues to business case viability.
This session looks at the technical and market challenges and debates the current options. From the CPE perspective, these include WiFi and femtocells. From a core perspective there are a range of gateway solutions – e.g. RAN, PDG or BTS/NodeB Aggregation. What are the respective benefits and liabilities – both for operators and end users? What migration paths offer the greatest investment protection for early deployed solutions?
The cost and availability of dual-mode handsets and femtocells, backhaul savings, impacts on voice and data subscription revenues, OPEX for provisioning changes… All these factors and more come under scrutiny as they lay down the imperative business case for Next Generation Convergence roll out.
Panellists: Sanjay Bhatia, Director of Product Line Management, GenBand Inc.; Phil Tilley, Vice President Marketing Strategy & Skill, Alcatel-Lucen

2:50 – 3:20 pm Tech Focus II - Mobile Backhaul: The Optimum Solution for Mobile Internet
Market Perspective by: Richard Webb, Directing Analyst, WiMAX, WiFi, and Mobile Devices, Infonetics Research

One of today's biggest trends is the demand for high-speed mobile data, with the Apple iPhone being the highest-profile example. But the hidden cost to demands for ubiquitous mobile data is that data has to be backhauled between the base station and the operator's network. Yet upgrading a network designed for voice traffic into one that's becoming both increasingly data-centric and much busier is neither simple nor cheap.
Solutions include wireless - such as microwaves - T1 lines, aggregated or mid-band Ethernet, and femtocells. Cost-effectiveness, longevity and management are just three of the many issues that carriers need to juggle before selecting a technology. So what's the best choice?
Panellists: Nan Chen, President, MEF; Phil Tilley, Vice President Marketing Strategy & Skills, Alcatel-Lucent; Francois Tournesac, EMEA Sales Director for Carrier Ethernet Transport, Nokia Siemens Networks; Natasha Tamaskar, VP of Product Marketing, GenBand Inc.

3:40 – 4:10 pm Tech Focus III - NAC: Ready for Prime Time?
Market Perspective by: Rik Moy, President, NSS Labs

As networks get busier with ever-larger numbers of people requiring varying levels of access privilege, making sure that the right privileges apply to the right individuals gets much tougher. Traditional methods of managing identities and controlling access, such as VLANs and ACLs, don't scale and are too simple, say critics.
What you need is network access control (NAC) - at least, that's the claim of the NAC vendors. But are they right? Or are there other solutions out there? Can you combine the tools you already have to create a NAC-like system? Here, we examine the claims of the NAC vendors.

4:10 – 4:40 pm Tech Focus IV - Green IT: The Risks and Opportunities of Environmental Change
Market Perspective by: Sharifah Amirah, Principal Analyst - ICT Europe, Frost & Sullivan

Green issues dominate the IT agenda but, apart from the cost savings and the marketing advantages, being green isn't just about cutting the electricity bill -- it can generate other opportunities too.
So, can being greener help organisations become leaner? What role will legislation play in driving greener behaviour? Can standardisation and best practices help to measure and so encourage green initiatives and, if so, how? In other words, how can green drive innovation?
Throw out your preconceptions...
Panellists: Brad Booth, Senior Principal Engineer, AMCC - CTO Office/Chair of the Board, Ethernet Alliance; Pat-Chapman Pincher, CEO, Cavell Group; Jonathon Steel, Founder and CEO, The Bathwick Group; Rik Moy, President, NSS Labs

4:40 – 5:00 pm Closing Keynote
Presentation by: Duncan Clark, Chairman, BDA

Thinking Forward – to MWC and beyond
After NetEvents comes Mobile World Congress – with “Think Forward” as this year’s theme. It is being heralded as “the most compelling MWC yet” and, according to Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, it promises: "a great opportunity to take an in-depth look at the critical role that communications technologies can play in helping companies address the difficult economic issues we face today."
We are privileged to have Duncan Clark for the closing keynote because he is uniquely qualified on exactly these issues. Previously an investment banker with Morgan Stanley in London and Hong Kong involved in telecommunications, media and technology (TMT) transactions, Duncan went on to found BDA – for fifteen years a leading advisory service on the TMT sectors in China, India, Vietnam and other fast-growing Asian economies.
Duncan will close our conference with a review of the day’s sessions in the light of his profound understanding of the global economic situation and how it will impact – and be directed by – developments across the driving economies of Asia. He will also set the scene for next week’s Congress, drilling down to the real issues behind today’s mood of uncertainty, and spelling out guidelines on what to look for at the event and where to find it.
With Duncan as your guide, you get straight to the core of MWC 09.
