Changing the Rules of Networking: The Converged Infrastructure and Beyond

Today, customers cannot keep up with the rapid pace of business change. They are working with a fragile networking infrastructure that requires different tools, operating systems and management environment. All of this means that networks are hard to manage, vulnerable to attacks, and expensive to maintain. Networking is a fundamental part of an integrated compute fabric, The Converged Infrastructure, that seamlessly connects servers and storage to applications and end users. Networks should not be a choke point. They need to be open, flexible, robust, secure and easy to manage. Jay Mellman, Senior Director for the HP Networking Division, will discuss how HP is changing the rules of networking with high performance, scalable and open solutions that deliver a simpler, more agile networking infrastructure with lower total cost of ownership.

9:30 - 10:00 am Conference Debate I-Virtualisation and Datacentre Transformation
Introduced and Chaired by Tim Dillon, Associate Vice President Research, IDC

Since the mainframe succumbed to the personal computer revolution, there have been several attempts to revive the centralised model with dumb terminals, client/server, thin clients, zero clients, desktop virtualisation and the web book.

The logical arguments are powerful - centralised control, better managed software, simpler security, cheaper workstations and so on - but somehow life just isn't like that. People like their personal computers, just as they prefer their own cars to public transport. And hasn't the free market consistently proved more efficient than central control?

A few years ago the picture seemed a lot clearer, but the free market concept is now facing its first serious challenge in thirty years. Maybe the same applies to the autonomous PC concept? Maybe the tide is turning and Cloud applications, virtualisation and the consolidation of datacentres will bring computing back to its roots?

Our panel members can make a strong case for the benefits of datacentre consolidation, but can they convince us that it really will happen this time?

Panellists: Richard Kagan, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Orchestration Systems BU, Infoblox; Jay Mellman, Senior Director, HP Networking division; Angus Robertson, Director, Spirent Communications

10:00 – 10:30 am Conference Debate Session II - IT Automation – heavy traffic on a dirt road?
Introduced and Chaired by: Ian Keene, Vice President, Gartner

Virtualization promises new levels of automation for IT systems, but it runs on a network needing a lot of manual tinkering. That's right, the network automation business had done a poor job of automating itself, and the gap is growing between increasing intervention demands – more IP addresses, more change, more new initiatives – and policies and practices that have been around for decades.

More intelligence and automation are needed if enterprise networks are to deliver on the promises of cloud computing , but where should it reside? Can we rely on plug in devices to upgrade existing networks, or should we build intelligence into the network from the ground up? Adding complexity means a greater burden for design and testing - how far can that also be automated?

With ever more devices (and kinds of devices) connecting to networks these questions become critical to the future of our IT economy. Can our panel agree on the best way forward?

Panellists: Richard Kagan, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Orchestration Systems BU, Infoblox; Greg Fairbanks, Fanfare Software; Daniel Bar-Lev, CEO, The Video Convergence Forum, Greg Fairbanks, Director of Product Marketing, Fanfare Software

10:50 - 11:20 am Conference Debate Session III-Unified Communications & Collaboration
Introduced and Chaired by Alex Smith, Analyst, Canalys

Unified Communications aim to reduce communication response time by integrating real time communications (instant messaging, voice, video, speech recognition and presencing) together with non-real time services such as fax, e-mail, voice-mail and SMS.

Users can know where their colleagues are located - office, car, club or home - and which communication is currently preferred - eg cell phone, email or instant messaging. You can even search for and connect to available skills as well as individuals - like finding a motor mechanic with a high definition voice link to tell me if the noise in my car is dangerous or not.

That last example raises an important question - is voice connection enough for business, or should we go for quality? You don't want to miss an important conference call, but can you always identify who is talking, can you understand foreign accents over a poor line or be sure of exactly what was said? High definition voice plus SVC-based video could be the better option - as poor voice quality leads to misunderstandings, increases fatigue, and decreases productivity.

A balance must be found between immediacy, clarity and cost-effectiveness, and traditional video architectures simply cannot deliver it, while newer systems designed specifically for the Internet may provide a solution, and new applications to enhance mobile video experience may further reinforce it. We've brought together key speakers from the fields of video, voice and unified communications to discuss these challenges and suggest optimal solutions.

Panellists: Jim Machi, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Dialogic Corporation; Ofer Shapiro, CEO and Co-Founder, Vidyo ; Jay Mellman, Senior Director, HP Networking division; Richard Norris, Practice Consultant, Wainhouse Research; Daniel Bar-Lev, CEO, The Video Convergence Forum

11:20 -11:50 am Conference Debate Session IV- How good is your Cloud cover?
Introduced & Chaired by: Camille Mendler, Vice President - Global Service Strategies,Yankee Group
Yankee Group

Market data suggests that, for all the hype and potential savings offered by cloud computing, there is still considerable resistance in the market, notably from smaller companies that might benefit the most from its scalability. Maybe they are right? The potential for attack in any Internet connected system is reason enough to be concerned about the security and reliability of applications in the cloud.

How is the service provider going to raise confidence in their ability to deliver highly resilient, secure cloud computing? Dare we trust an SaaS provider with no more protection than IDS? What are we protecting against, and how do we best defend the system? However secure we are, how can we be seen to be secure by our customers?

These are complex issues, and we have assembled a panel embracing every aspect of IT security, from antivirus to IPS, as well as test and network optimisation services, to find the answers.

Panellists: John Pirc, Sr. Product Line Manager - Next Generation Security Products, Tipping- Point; Eric Haïssaguerre, Regional Director, IT Services Business, Asia Pacific, Orange Business Services; Alex Smith, Analyst, Canalys, Angus Robertson, Director, Spirent Communications

Video for Business & Society
We are a highly visual species – "seeing is believing", while one dud pixel on an LCD display and our gaze goes straight to it. Feed our eyes and you feed our souls. Indeed, according to Gartner: "By 2015 over 200 million workers globally will run corporate-supplied videoconferencing from their desktops." But why stop there? Let everyone, everywhere join the party on their PC, Mac, smart phone, or head-up display. With 3-D TV sets already on sale, how will broadcast TV morph into a visually connected IP world?

To realise this vision the user experience needs to align with cost and performance expectations. Caught in the race for the Megabits-per-second we forget what user's want, and traditional video architectures simply can't offer the performance and QoE at a realistic price. But the tide is turning: Ofer explains how newer systems – custom built for the Internet – promise to leap this hurdle by leveraging the latest processor and compression technology on a single architecture across room systems, desktops, net books, tablets and smart phones – whether over standard Internet, 4G or LTE.

So, where might this revolution lead us? According to Ofer, this is just the beginning. Extend a visual species' vision to see across continents and you make a profound shift in what becomes, literally, their worldview. Just as the Internet has shifted our understanding of culture and knowledge, and TV has transformed politics, so will universal video connectivity impact business, recreation and society. Are we ready for it?

2:20 – 2:50 pm Conference Debate Session V - Better LTE than never?
Introduced & Chaired by Adeel Najam, Industry Analyst, Asia Pacific, ICT Practice, Frost & Sullivan

Frost & Sullivan

LTE is being hyped as the utopian solution for omnipresent broadband connection, and analysts are pretty confident about its long term promise. But, as recent Dell'Oro reports point out, there is still a lot to be said in terms of ROI for service providers just upgrading their existing HSPA networks to HSPA+.

Will this attractive option put the brakes on LTE deployment in times of economic uncertainty? Should device manufacturers be forging ahead with LTE or concentrating on better ways to interface with and utilise what we've already got? Unified communications and improved voice quality may provide more elegant solutions than bandwidth hungry applications that wait on LTE.

Recent research also proposes mobile video as the answer to declining ARPU, with extra benefits such as mobile advertising revenue and reduced subscriber churn by enabling applications that truly enhance the customer's experience.
The optimum strategy no doubt includes all three approaches, but we'd like the panel to decide to what extent it is best now to focus on getting more from current potential bandwidth and be able to make even better use of LTE when it arrives - even if it arrives a bit later as a consequence.

Panellists: Amir Zoufonoun, CEO, Exalt Communications; Angus Robertson, Director, Spirent Communications; Dr Ray Owen, Head of Technical Marketing and Pre-Sales Networks - Enterprise Mobility Solutions and Networks, Motorola Asia Pacific; General Director, Motorola Vietnam

2:50 – 3:20 pm Conference Debate Session VI - Casting the Ethernet wider – benefits to the enterprise
Introduced & Chaired by: Siow Meng Soh, Consultant Analyst, Current Analysis

The MEF's Global Interconnect program, and the ratification of the ENNI standard is already making it easier to span Ethernet services in a timely and economical manner over multiple operator networks, creating what Michael Howard from Infonetics described as "a multi-billion dollar opportunity in waiting". Standardized interconnect, including issues such as CoS, SLAs and management, brings with new global business opportunities for service providers and vendors leading to even wider opportunities for world business with its promise of fast and cost-effective global interconnection.

40/100G Ethernet is accelerating the proliferation of islands of Ethernet data, and Global Interconnect promises to unite those islands, but how well is the business community prepared for a whole new phase of globalisation and its consequences?

Economic uncertainty makes the cost-effective flexibility and scalability of Ethernet al the more attractive, but what will be more significant is the new business opportunities it offers in terms of social business networking and customer involvement. Who will spread these messages and how?

Our panel will be looking at the future of global communications, the new ways of doing business and how best to spread the message.

Panellists: Marc Teichtahl, Head of Engineering, Uecomm; Kevin Vachon, Chief Operating Officer, MEF; Adeel Najam, Industry Analyst, Asia Pacific, ICT Practice, Frost & Sullivan, David White, Systems Engineering Manager, Brocade

3:20 - 3:50pm Conference Debate Session VII-The IT Landscape in Asia : a CxO Perspective
Introduced and Chaired by Tim Dillon, Associate Vice President Research, IDC

For four decades the USA has been the fountainhead of IT innovation and development. While manufacturing has spread to the APAC area, Silicon Valley still holds the reins. You could say the same for the world economy, and yet the shift over the last two years has been widely reported, with predictions that the US could be losing its lead.

So how is this reflected in the IT arena? In terms of broadband availability and usage, Japan and Korea are already streets ahead, and according to conventional wisdom this is the way to create a new generation of tech-savvy innovators. Global corporations are increasingly looking East - what are they seeing? A new source of inspiration or just a vigorous new market?

We invite our pick of C-level executives to share their insights - what is brewing? The economy or IT - which is the change driver? Where should the savvy investor place their bets in 2010?

Panellists: William Yu, VP and GM APAC, Vidyo; Amir Zoufonoun, CEO, Exalt Communications ; Camille Mendler, Vice President - Global Service Strategies, Yankee Group
