'Making a Business of the Unconventional'

Conventional wisdom says Cisco owns the enterprise and 9 out of 10 startups will fail. If so, how does Silicon Valley continue to exist?

We think it is because of people like Jeff Prince – ASIC mastermind with 8 patents to his name and 20 years experience in enterprise networking. He founded Centillion in th early 90s and sold it to Bay Networks, turning it into a $1billion product line. Then he co-founded Foundry with Bobby Johnson ”just to get onto the Ethernet bandwagon” and launched the third highest IPO in US stockmarket history. From there he created his latest venture - a holistic LAN security specialist called Consentry Networks…

But what does Jeff himself think?

He claims that, despite the long-standing strength of major vendors like IBM and Cisco, companies continue to identify and capitalize on unsolved problems, and the VCs continue to fund them. And it's not just incremental improvements these innovative startups offer -- many create major sea changes in the networking landscape.

In this keynote Jeff investigates how those broad waves of change have redefined the landscape, examines some of the current changes underway, looks at how businesses can make use of these new ideas, and explores why these innovations almost never come out of the major vendors.

Come hear Jeff Prince, an innovator whose made his business out of being unconventional, discuss these trends and their impact on the enterprise.

The Multiservices LAN: Making It Work Safely, Securely, Efficiently
Introduced & Chaired by: Jeremiah Caron, Vice President – Analysis, Current Analysis

Current Analysis

VoIP has received a lot of attention – mainly due to its proposition for free Internet phone calls, and its impact on carriers. But what about its impact on the enterprise network? VoIP has the potential for doubling the amount of nodes in a large enterprise, and with a different type of traffic. But that's not all that's new on the LAN. Wireless access nodes, using WiFi and other technologies, are impacting traffic patterns and usage. Service-oriented architectures and Web Services are turning the client/server model into a complex, orchestrated mesh. While enterprise video is evolving more slowly, it potential for traffic – and traffic disruption – can be overestimated. On top of all this, enterprises have new requirements for multilayer security and operational management. What's an IT professional to do? Some companies say, buy it all from us. Others say, choose the best technologies, and then integrate them into a robust offering. Neither approach is perfect, but what's the solution then? Join us as this panel talks about the newest LAN services, and explores why you can't just throw bandwidth at networking problems any more. We'll cover technologies, problems, challenges, and much more.
Panellists: Dave Endler, Director of Security Research for TippingPoint & Chairman of VOIPSA; Cliff Hannel, Vice President, Acquisitions and Strategy, Ixia and Umesh Kukreja, Director of Marketing, Atrica and Geoff Gudgion, Managing Director EMEA, ShoreTel.

Network Access Control: The Future of Security, or a Meaningless Phrase?
Introduced & Chaired by: Jan Guldentops, Director, BA Test Labs
BA Test Labs

Keep the bad guys out, let the good guys in: The requirements for network access control (NAC) are simple to understand, but confusion, complexity and costs surrounding all the options is stifling deployment. This session will examine key NAC components, such as firewalls, IDS and IPS solutions, and IP Address assignment tools, to understand how help enterprises deploy security and access control measures that make sense for their specific needs. The problem, however, is not there aren't solutions available: It's that they may be too many different solutions, each addressing a different aspect of the problem, and those solutions are complex, expensive, and don't work well together. Why is NAC so hard to implement? We'll discuss how today's NAC tools can be deployed to address scalability, management, and compliance/governance needs, and how they can be implemented without overhauling the entire infrastructure; and ruining the IT budget. We'll also project where NAC technology and solutions will evolve throughout the year and beyond.
Panellists: Marc Willebeek-LeMair, CTO, 3Com; Jeff Prince, CTO & Chairman, ConSentry Networks; Rick Kagan, Vice President, Marketing, Infoblox; Johan Beckers, Director Technology Solutions EMEA, Internet Security Systems (ISS); Peter Crowcombe, Director Enterprise Marketing EMEA, Juniper and Kevin Porter, Worldwide Product Manager - Access Control Solutions, ProCurve Networking by HP

Traffic Management: Shaping Better Network Performance, Packet By Packet, Policy by Policy

Introduced & Chaired by: Steve Broadhead, Director, Broadband Testing Labs

Broadband Testing

What's the easiest way to improve network performance? Simple: Throw more hardware at it, some people would say: More pipes, more switches, more bandwidth. But as any real-world network manager knows, while that sounds simple, it's not the best approach. Sure, you can spend a fortune on new infrastructure and see improvement, but bandwidth alone won't solve network performance issues. A better approach is to apply intelligence to LAN and WAN bottlenecks, though the use of traffic management hardware, software and tools. This debate will explore recent breakthroughs in network traffic management, from the use of accelerators and intelligence cache systems, network load balancers, test equipment and policy-based gateways and application-specific solutions for improving client QoE (Quality of Experience). We'll explore these innovations, and more, to determine what works, what doesn't, and what's just a waste of time and money.

Carrier Ethernet Access: Winning the Last Mile

Introduced & Chaired by: Carsten Rossenhövel, Managing Director, EANTC (European Advanced Networking Test Center)

IDC

Carsten commences this session with a presentation covering recent results from EANTC’s independent multi-vendor Carrier Ethernet interoperability test and will then lead the panel discussion for the fight for last-mile business customers will not be won by focusing on the transport layer of the network. Instead it will be dominated by carriers that successfully deliver the requisite service level agreements to support layered business services in the mid-band Ethernet environment, delivering the performance, quality and service level agreements required to support their business customers’ migration to the business triple play of voice, video and data. And that doesn’t just mean fibre optics: new advances in high-speed copper, traffic management, and wireless backhaul are extending the service edge with high speed, high availability, high profits – and low costs. The session will examine the newest technologies and their associated service opportunities. We’ll challenge our participants to explain how carriers can leverage layered services to generate additional revenue from each customer connection, and examine the business case for scaling this service architecture throughout the access network. Can carriers make the pitch to replace legacy T1 and Frame Relay services with a more flexible, IP-based service infrastructure – and convince those customers who simply refuse to let go? We’ll cover that, and more.
Panellists: Craig Easley, Associate VP Marketing, Actelis; Gary Bolton, VP of Marketing and Product Management, Hatteras Networks; Bob Mandeville, President & Founder, Iometrix and Mike Tighe, Chairman of the Metro Ethernet Forum; Director of Corporate Strategy, Verizon Business

‘Re-Engineering Telco Business Models for Profitability’
Telcos have historically deployed a range of network architectures to delivery highly profitable voice and data services to business and residential subscribers. The challenges and costs associated with the transition to evolving IP and Ethernet network topologies has already resulted in a number of business failures and consolidations.

With revenues from their traditional voice and data services plummeting, how will Carriers re-engineer their business models to cope with VoIP, high bandwidth/low cost broadband services and the migration to wireless networks catering to the demands of an increasingly mobile society?

Can the incumbent providers develop new business models that will enable them to add value by differentiating their networks? Mike will share with us his experiences and views on how they are facing up to these and other challenges.

Fixed-Mobile Convergence in the Enterprise: Cellular Meets Corporate Meets WLAN

Introduced & Chaired by: Dean Bubley, Analyst & Founder, Disruptive Analysis

Disruptive Analysis

Telecom managers are faced with the challenges of reducing and controlling cellular spending, tying in mobile users to the corporate IT/communications environment, improving indoor coverage, and leveraging investments in mobile devices, wireless LANs and PBXs. The answer: enterprise fixed-mobile convergence. Competition between fixed and mobile operators is getting more complex – M&A, new spectrum, new technologies – and this is driving service providers to deliver better value, coverage and flexibility to their business customers. Meanwhile, new wireless LAN technologies, from mesh to advanced Voice-over-Wireless-LAN systems, are giving customers new options for turbo-charging their critical wireless infrastructure. This session explores where wireless meets the enterprise, including the convergence – or potential convergence – of WiFi and cellular, as well in-building pico-cells and mobility management platforms. Which approaches will enable enterprises to manage their costs, while providing employees with the greatest levels of mobility and user-friendly convenience? And is there an added-vale role for mobile operators and WLAN technology providers? Come find out!

Putting Global Carrier Network Interoperability to the Test

Introduced & Chaired by: Bob Mandeville, President & Founder, Iometrix

Iometrix

Bob Mandeville, President and Founder of Iometrix test laboratories, knows the challenges of conformance testing. For example, the Test Plan for Traffic Management recently developed by Iometrix to test conformance to the Metro Ethernet Forum's (MEF) global Carrier Ethernet service definitions included no less than 183 test cases and engaged complex policing algorithms applied to the user/network interface (UNI), the Ethernet virtual circuit (EVC) and classes of service within the EVC.

Bob will launch this session with an account of these challenges, and what it means to take the idealised parameters of a network interoperability specification, to hammer out real world test procedures and to see commercial systems put through their paces. He then introduces a truly heavyweight panel - including the President of the MEF, the President of the Multiservice Forum (MSF) responsible for the massive global IMS interoperability event GMI 2006, also senior representatives from leading test vendors plus the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Lab – to discuss today's hottest new technologies and how they plan to meet the challenges of global interoperability.
Panellists: Roger Ward, President, Multi-Service Forum (MSF); Office of the CTO, BT Group; Chris Daniel, Vice Chairman, Multi-Service Forum (MSF); VP Business Development, LeapSTONE Systems; Mike Tighe, Chairman of the Metro Ethernet Forum; Director of Corporate Strategy, Verizon Business and Ben Schultz, Managing Engineer InterOperability Lab, University of New Hampshire

General Debate Session: New Generations in Technology Leadership

Introduced & Chaired by: Ian Keene, Research VP, Gartner

Gartner

Look around the room: Do you see more grey hair—or less? Over the next 10 years, many of the networking companies that drive our industry, from carriers to equipment makers to software giants – will undergo a radical transformation as their charismatic founders step down. The announcement that Microsoft's Bill Gates will retire in 2008, and the recent replacement of Scott McNealy as CEO of Sun Microsystems, are harbingers of changes. What will happen at Cisco when John Chambers departs, and at Juniper after Scott Kriens and Pradeep Sindhu? What's the implication of Telefónica's acquisition of O2 earlier this year, and of Telenor's purchase of Vodafone's Swedish operations? Leadership changes, succession plans are likely to be among the biggest stories that journalists cover in the next decade. This CEO panel discussion will ask the hard questions about the executive suite: How will second-generation leadership change today's high fliers? Will new blood spur more innovation, or slow down innovation? Take part in the debate.
Panellists: Paul Di Leo, CEO, Zeus Technologies; Jeff Prince, CTO & Chairman, ConSentry Networks and Marc Willebeek-LeMair, CTO, 3Com
